Course Description (Published in the Choice Book)
This two-semester course provides the content knowledge and skills necessary to understand the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of people and places throughout the world, both past and present. The course will prepare students for the three-year required social studies sequence. Topics will include the themes of historical geography, political geography, and economic geography. Extensive opportunities to develop and refine writing competencies will prepare students for the High School Gateway. Students are instructed on efficient and effective methods and strategies to read, write, think, organize, take notes, and demonstrate what they have learned throughout the course.

· 3 Ring Loose-leaf Binder and paper
· Dividers
· Colored Pencils and a Highlighter (keep in your notebook!)
· A box of Kleenex and a ream of paper
· Other necessary supplies will be announced during the year for projects, etc.

Expectations for Overall Success
Student requirements and important information:
1. All Brookwood rules apply to this class.
2. Be in your assigned seat and ready to go when the bell rings. All tardies and absences will be dealt with according to Brookwood High School policy.
3. Please bring with you everyday:
a. Textbook
b. Notebook - 3 ring binder with dividers
c. Writing utensils and colored pencils
d. Assigned work - no work will be accepted late.
e. Student Planner/Agenda
4. Organize your material by unit and date of assignment. Stay organized daily.
5. Read everything assigned thoroughly. Everything you are assigned is fair game for evaluation at any time. You are responsible for the information in each unit.
6. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to make up work. Look in the MakeUp Notebook for assignments. Call your homework buddy if you have a question about class. If a major project is due on a day you are absent you are still responsible for turning it in on time.
7. NO FOOD, DRINKS, GUM, ETC. IN THE CLASSROOM!
8. Tests/evaluations will be announced ahead of time and may be given at any time, usually when a segment of information has been completed. This may be after one chapter, several chapters, a unit, or just a day’s notes.
9. Anything not specifically covered in this syllabus will be dealt with according to the policies of Brookwood High School. See your student’s handbook for details.
GSPC GATEWAY EXAM INFORMATION:
All students must demonstrate knowledge of the Gwinnett County Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Students will be provided a booklet listing each of these AKS by course at the beginning of the school year. Ninth graders enrolling in 1998-1999 and beyond will need to pass the Gwinnett County Gateway Exam over the AKS before graduation. The Gateway Exam will measure students’ ability to write effectively about the science and social studies AKS covered in the 9th and 10th grades. The exam will be administered in the spring of the 10th grade year. Students will have several opportunities to retake the exam if they are not successful the first time.
